A Very Merry Unsandwich Day to You!

Business Insider: National Sandwich Day, November 3

Thank you, Mod Michele. You sent this to me punctually and I am tardy in posting. Lately I’m looking at life from behind the eight ball. The holidays are coming, fast and furious, long before I call the pocket. Leapt upon, we were, by National Sandwich Day, November 3. Happily, every day is sandwich day – even when you need to crack open the box of matzoh.

One tiny caveat with this map – speaking as the expert I am, having not lived in the midwest for 30 years – one would not eat a Wisconsin bratwurst with cheese curds, not on the brat anyway. After cheese curds, yes, but not under. Ask my mother. Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 8.40.44 AMScreen Shot 2013-11-12 at 8.40.56 AMScreen Shot 2013-11-12 at 8.41.10 AMScreen Shot 2013-11-12 at 8.41.19 AM

The business of being a sandwich insider is a very tough business indeed. Not for the feint of stomach.

  1. Hungry, off to find a sandwich!

  2. Yes, me too! Trying Cenan Bakery for the first time.

  3. Jeff Saxman grilled ham & cheese is the best we can do?

Lisa Cherkasky I agree. That’s pathetic. What about country ham at least? What do you think is a better choice for VA?

Brian Ringers Philly cheese steak is a rough one, ask anyone from outside of Philly and that would be the answer, ask anyone from philly and it would be Roast pork. Jersey however is right on, when I first saw this Taylor ham and cheese (yellow american BTW) on a Kaiser, came to my mind immediately, and they got it right by calling it Taylor ham, NOT pork roll.

Laura Cooke It’s not my favorite but even a ham biscuit would be more accurate. I’d say Va. peanut butter.

Lisa Cherkasky Ham biscuit is right on, Laura Cooke. Good one! Peanut butter, too. I’m with you on that.

Robert Cohen Wilkoff Louisiana get’s second place if it’s a fried Oyster Po-Boy!

Lisa Cherkasky I agree that the oyster po-boy suits.

Robert Cohen Wilkoff ME get’s 3rd with the lobster roll, if it’s from The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport!

Robert Cohen Wilkoff I always thought the Ham Biscuit was a South Carolina specialty.

Lisa Cherkasky Virginia hospitality is how I think of ham biscuits. Down around VA beach and Wmsburg.

Robert Cohen Wilkoff Stayed in a cool B&B many years ago in Charleston SC, where they were listed as the SC special breakfast sandwich. Really good!

Chris Lewis A Polish Boy Kielbasa Sandwich? No. Probably more apropos of Western PA – but the Philly Cheesesteak pushed it further west.

Mahmoud El-Darwish DC should have been a Hot Pastrami with Sauerkraut but I think that was in the past…

Carolyn Robb Schimley NY clearly represents the eastern part of the state. Beef on Weck is slighted!

Chris Lewis Wikipedia says the Polish Boy is native to Cleveland. Mea culpa. I’d still lobby for the cheese coney. If a half-smoke passes mustard then so should the cheese coney.

  4. I’m perfectly happy with the WI selection on this map but I agree, VA got the shaft. Not to mention they don’t even recognize DC on the map…Ben’s Chili Dog was robbed!

  5. If you’re okay with it Sorry-Birds Ellen, then I am okay with it!

Yes, I absolutely agree about DC. And DC is such a no-brainer. The half smoke!
