Taim uses better ingredients, and the King of Falafel makes crispier chickpea balls, but Mamoun’s still serves New York’s quintessential falafel sandwich. The ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the pita pocket, and it’s not overstuffed — you can actually eat this like a sandwich, without using a fork or making a monster mess. The balls always have a nice crust and pleasantly crumbly texture inside, and the tahini is thick and creamy. Although it’s easy to be a snob about falafel in New York, Mamoun’s deserves some credit for turning out a consistent product. It is, quite possible, the most famous falafel stand in the country.
